HSM file system mounting problems

Description

On a system, where the /etc/fstab file contains an entry for the /ivd/ivdfs_01 file system with type hsmfs, running the mount /ivd/ivdfs_01 command produces the following error:
# mount /ivd/ivdfs_01/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/vg_ivd/ivdfs_01, or too many mounted file systems

(Linux system specific)

Explanation

This error is reported if any of the following is true:
OpenArchive (OA) daemons are not running.
• There is no OA partition configured for the specified HSM file system or logical volume.
• The device file specified for the variable FileSystemID in the OA partition configuration is incorrect.

Workaround

Determine the cause of this error and act accordingly:
• Check if OA is running using the ivd --status command; if needed, start the OA processes using the ivd --start command.
• Check if the partition for the mount point is configured in the OA implementation.
The logical volume is configured with its FileSystemID variable specified in the OA partition configuration file. You need to verify its value matches the actual device file assigned to the logical volume (file system). For this purpose, first determine the mapped directory:
#ls -l /dev/VG_ivd/ivdfs_01
rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 May 18 11:55 /dev/vg_ivd/ivdfs_01 ->
/dev/mapper/vg_ivd-ivdfs_01
Run the following commands and compare their outputs; the retrieved Major:Minor parameters should be the same:
# ivdpartition --show PART_01 | grep FileSystemID | sed \
's/FileSystemID = \"\(.*\)"/\1/'
# ll /dev/mapper/vg_ivd-ivdfs_01 | awk '{print $5 $6}'
If the numbers displayed are not the same for both commands, you need to properly reconfigure the OA partition.

Description

If an OA partition is removed from the OA configuration, with the associated HSM file system left intact, this HSM file system cannot be mounted again even when the OA partition is configured with the same parameters.

Explanation

After an OA partition is removed, its associated HSM file system cannot be used with a newly added OA partition. Before it can be assigned to a new OA partition, such HSM file system needs to be re-formatted and its HSMDB removed from the corresponding directory.

Workaround

None

Description

After OA processes are started, the OA partitions are not reported as being 'mounted' by the ivdpartition -l -D command.

Explanation

Inappropriate values in entries for HSM file systems, specified in the local file /etc/fstab, prevent partitions from being mounted.

Workaround

Check contents of the file /etc/fstab and modify them appropriately.

For information on the correct values, see the OA Installation Guide for Linux, chapter ”Installing OA software”, section ”Automating the mounting of HSM file systems”.
